LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Louisville Metro police said a bank robbery getaway ended in minutes with two suspects in custody and the driver dead after detectives tracked the suspects' car to Cherokee Park.

Police have not explained how detectives knew the suspected getaway vehicle from a bank robbery was in Cherokee Park Thursday afternoon, but Adam Evans is certain how it ended.

"The guy gets out, he was holding something up," he said. "The next thing I know, I hear a gunshot and he goes down, and starts bleeding," Evans said.

"As close as we could get to the tape, there's like a puddle of blood on the ground," his friend, Mark Cornett added.

The two were among a group of young adults from Bullitt County, hitting the slopes of Dog Hill for sledding.

Brandon Owen saw a police cruiser pull in behind the suspect's Nissan Xterra. "I thought somebody was getting pulled over for something stupid," he said.

In reality, LMPD public information officer Alicia Smiley told reporters, detectives believed that the Xterra was the SUV witnesses saw leaving the Highlands branch of PNC Bank, after it was robbed shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday.

"Two of the suspects got out of the vehicle, our officers were able to detain them immediately," Smiley said. "A third suspect remained in the vehicle, in the driver's seat and attempted to drive away. Because of the road conditions, he was unable to do so."

"Our officers commanded him to put the weapon down," Smiley said. "He refused to do so."

Owens and Cornett said the gunshot sounded like a firecracker. I've shot many guns, it didn't sound like a gun to me, either," Evans said. "I guess it was."

"His condition did not look very good," Smiley said. "We do know that it was a very, very serious wound."

The suspect died at University of Louisville Hospital less than two hours later. Police have not revealed his name, nor those of the other two suspects, nor what charges they may face.

Smiley did not indicate whether police fired their weapons, or whether the suspect may have fired more than the fatal shot.

"Our public integrity unit is going to be on scene, and they will be handling this investigation along with the assistance of our robbery unit, " Smiley said.

An hour after the incident, the group of sledders from Mt. Washington were struggling with what they'd seen or heard.

"It's the last place I would have expected it," Evans said.

Owen viewed it as little more than random. "Guess we just drew a bad straw," he said. "And ended up here on a bad day."
