Graco car seat buckles recalled over concerns of children getting stuck

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Graco announced a major recall of harness buckles used in 3.7 million child car seats produced from 2009 through July 2013.

According to the company's website, "food and dried liquids…can make some harness buckles progressively more difficult to open over time or become stuck in the latched position."

The voluntary recall is just for the harness buckle and "does not in any way affect the performance of the car seat," Graco said. The company said no injuries have been reported related to the buckles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration criticized the way Graco is handling the recall in a letter written Tuesday saying the company's report is "incomplete and misleading."

The following models are part of the recall:

Toddler Convertible Car Seats

  • Cozy Cline
  • Comfort Sport
  • Classic Ride 50
  • My Ride 65
  • My Ride 70
  • My Ride 65 with Safety Surround
  • Size4Me 70
  • My Size 70
  • Head Wise 70
  • Smart Seat

Harnessed Booster Seats

  • Nautilus 3-in-1
  • Nautilus Elite and Argos

The company is offering a free, "new and improved," replacement harness buckle to customers affected by the recall. To claim one call Graco customer service at (800) 345-4109 during business hours (Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or email customerservices@gracobaby.com.

A major issue to NHTSA was Graco's resistance to include 1.83 million additional car seats for infants in the recall. Their letter stated they received reports from owners of those seats who "had no choice but to resort to the extreme measure of cutting the harness straps to remove their child."

In their announcement, Graco went on to list cleaning tips for the buckles which the company says may improve performance. NHTSA disagrees with this wording as they stated "Graco incorrectly implies that the defect exists only if the buckle is not properly maintained."
