More than 60 cases dismissed following officer's arrest, suspension

MADISON, IN (WAVE) – Dozens of criminal cases in Indiana are being dismissed after the arrest of a City of Madison police officer.

Wednesday night the Madison Police Merit Board made the decision to suspend Officer Josh Abbott without pay pending a court hearing his lawyer requested, challenging the Merit Board's authority to fire him.

Madison Police Chief Dan Thurston confirmed Abbott's suspension. Abbott was arrested February 3 on felony domestic violence charges. Despite other run-ins with the law, Abbott was allowed to be a police officer.

Jefferson County Prosecutor Chad Lewis said charges will be dropped in 63 cases, including 8 felonies and 19 drunken driving cases, involving Abbott.

A court date for Abbott to challenge the board's decision has not been set.
