SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -
The life of a family pet was almost cut short in a house fire Monday, but fortunately the Springfield Township Fire Department was there.
Barbara Zorovich and Sherry Long say their family barely made it out of the burning house Monday night, but they had to leave their cat inside.
"We thought there was no hope, because he was in the basement where the fire started," Zorovich said. "I was really sick about how I was going to tell my daughter he was gone.
They lost just about everything in the fire, but thanks to one firefighter, they didn't lose Simba.
While fighting the fire, a firefighter spotted the 8-year-old cat and rushed him out of the house. Simba wasn't breathing, but the firefighter gave the cat his oxygen tank. Thanks to that quick thinking, Simba is safe and sound.
"We were devastated to think that he was not among us," said Zorovich. "And when the firefighters said, ‘We found your cat,' and then we realized that he was alive, it was just overwhelming joy."
The family doesn't know how that fire started, but they are grateful everyone, including Simba, made it out alive.
"I want to thank [that firefighter], especially, and all the responders," Zorovich said. "I don't have the words to express how grateful we are for them and what they did."
The vet said Simba suffered superficial burns to his lips and corneas from the smoke, but he is on the road to recovery.
