Police: Man used child as shield to prevent arrest

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Before Louisville Metro Police could arrest a man who assaulted two officers they had to free a child the man was using as a shield to keep police at bay.

An arrest report says police were called to the 200 block of N. 32nd Street around 1:30 p.m. February 15 about a man beating a woman. Officers said when the arrived several people were outside the home yelling and screaming.

As one women was about to tell officers what had happened police said Stefhon W. Simmons, 19, got in the woman's face and told her not to talk to police.

When officers went to arrest Simmons he punched one officer in the mouth and pushed another. Police said Simmons ran back into the house after a foot pursuit. After officers forced their way inside, they found Simmons in a back bedroom holding child, age 2, in front of him. Police had to physically remove the child to arrest Simmons.

Simmons was arrested on charges of assault, fleeing or veading police, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
