2 teens connected to house fire that killed 3 children face judge

NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - A mother who lost three of herchildren in a fire continued to spend every second in the hospital with herone surviving child as two of the teenagers connected to thearson faced a judge on Monday.

Shelby Makowsky, 18, and Kylie Jenks, 19, had nothing tosay as they walked in and out of court. The two teens were emotional as thejudge read the charges against them.

"Little girls do something crazy," said the victim'saunt Krystal Hughes. "Hopefully they get what they deserve."

"That's not a small thing to go and do somethingdeliberately do that," said the victim's cousin Johnnette Spencer."It's no way to show sympathy like that. You are talking about 2, 4, 6. Theseare kids."

Trinity, Tyrese, and Tai'zah died on January 4 in a housefire in New Albany. Their sibling Taty'ana,5, is the only one who survived.

Cody Cashion, 18, has already been arrested in connectionto the case.

Police said he fired a flare gun from a car into the homeon Ealy Street starting the fire after a dispute with a man who lived there. Prosecutorssaid Jenks was driving the car, in the back seat were Makowsky and a 17-year-oldgirl.

A friend of Makowsky's was in court on Monday.

"She's tore up about it," said Makowsky'sfriend Allison Shemayme. "She's emotional about it. They just both are. Theydidn't go there knowing kids were inside. Then again they shouldn't have wentthere in the first place."

"It's a very serious case," said Chief Deputy ProsecutorSteve Owen. "Anytime we have a loss of life like this, it's heartwrenching. I'm a grandfather myself with young babies. It's a hard thing. Wegotta hold people accountable for their actions."

Taty'ana remains in the hospital. Her family members said she is improving and still manages to find a way to smile despitelosing so much.

"They'll never be able to be happy knowing they didsomething like this," said Spencer.

Jenks, Makowsky and the 17-year-old, who is not beingidentified, are charged with conspiracy to commit arson. Cody Cashion is facing threecounts of felony murder.

A judge entered a not guilty plea on behalf of Jenks andMakowsky. Both are being held on a $100,000 court cash bond. They are scheduledto appear back in court March 18. If convicted, they could face 20 to 50 years.
