LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The second suspect in a series of purse snatchings outside Louisville stores was arrested Monday.
According to arrest warrants, Andrew Joseph Smith, 24, and Trent Joyner, 20, stole women's purses from their shopping carts while the victims loaded merchandise into their cars. Joyner was arrested in January.
Police said on January 18, Smith and Joyner targeted a woman outside Walmart on Bashford Manor Lane. The victim told officers she was loading groceries into her vehicle when two men pulled up in a car. One of them jumped out, grabbed the woman's purse out of her shopping cart and then fled the scene. Police said Joyner was driving the car and that Smith was the man who jumped out and stole the purse.
On January 21, the victim of a similar crime held onto her purse and was dragged a short distance as the suspects drove away, according to police. The incident happened outside Walmart on Outer Loop. Once again, Joyner is accused of driving the car, and Smith is accused of jumping out and grabbing the purse from the victim's cart.
On January 23, the same thing happened outside Sam's Club on Alliant Avenue in Jeffersontown. A woman told police she was putting groceries into her vehicle when a car drove up, a man jumped out, grabbed her purse out of her shopping cart, jumped back into the car and fled the scene. Police say Smith and Joyner played the same roles in this crime.
Smith and Joyner are charged with theft by unlawful taking and one count of second-degree robbery.
