LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - What do the Olympics and Churchill Downs have in common? The answer is food, or more specifically, the man behind the food.

David Danielson, executive chef for Churchill Downs, has been serving up his amazing creations at Churchill Downs since August 2013. He knows his way around the kitchen in Louisville and since he's so good at what he does, he hopped on a plane from the Bluegrass, flew 5,831 miles and landed in Sochi, Russia earlier this month.

"The light you see behind me is the Olympic torch," said Danielson.

Danielson talked to us via Skype. He's in Sochi cooking 200 meals a day for the OMEGA House. OMEGA is the official timekeeper of the Sochi Games. Danielson is no stranger to them either.

"In 2008 in Beijing, they built the first really big OMEGA house on the Olympic green," said Danielson. "I came out there, cooked for them and they were building a similar thing here in Sochi. They wanted to recreate the experience. They called me up and asked me to come to Sochi, Russia and cook again."

Danielson is giving Russia some of Kentucky's best.

"I brought a couple of ingredients over with me that I knew they wouldn't see like sorghum," said Danielson. "I obviously brought a couple of bottles of bourbon."

He's also learning about the Russian culture and what they have to offer.

"One of the things that has really amazed me is that I've gone out to a couple of markets there is an enormous amount of sausages."

Danielson said he has a whole Russian crew that he's working with. The work is hard, the hours are long. Any down time he has, he tries to enjoy the Olympic Games.

"It's an amazing experience a lot of fun," said Danielson.

Once Danielson returns home at the end of the month he will dive right into Derby planning.
