SOCHI, RUSSIA (WAVE) – The quarterfinal games have been completed in the Olympic men's hockey tournament and the two North American powers will face off for a spot in the gold medal match.
The United States defeated the Czech Republic 5-2 to move into the semifinals on Friday. Canada earned the right to face Team USA with a hard fought 2-1 win over Latvia.
The USA and Canada played for the gold in 2002 and 2010 with Canada willing both matches.
The biggest surprise of the day was the elimination of the host nation. Russia was bounced from the tournament with a 3-1 loss to Finland. The Finns will play Sweden in the semifinals. The Swedes were a 5-0 winner over Slovenia.
The gold medal game will be played Sunday.
