LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A mother accused of leaving her 6-year-old daughter alone in their apartment says she is not a monster. The child, who has Down syndrome, is living in a foster home.
On February 5, a neighbor told police she found the girl alone in the apartment covered in waste. The neighbor said then she hadn't seen the child's mother, Paloma Smith, for a week.

"I was like, 'Where's mommy, where's mommy?'" the neighbor, Anna Johnson recalled.
Smith admitted she left the child alone while in desperate need of help to treat her own mental illnesses, bi-polar and post traumatic stress disorder.

"I think that people should consider the possibility that we were both victims to this disease," Smith said.
Smith explained she was taken to a hospital by police where she stayed for 13 days thinking of her daughter.
"I just looked at a video and just started bawling because she is, she is a wonderful little girl," Smith said.
On her phone, are pictures and videos of the two of them together.
"It was wonderful ,and I lost sight of that," Smith said.
Smith's goal is treating her mental illness to earn the right to take care of the little girl she said she'd do anything for.
"I am never going to stop trying," she said, wiping away tears. "Never, because she is my everything."
Smith doesn't know exactly how much time passed while her daughter was alone. Police said Smith has not been charged with a crime, but the investigation isn't over.
