LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A former high school teacher in Nelson County has pled guilty to charges of rape.

Matthew Bowling, who once taught at Bethlehem High School in Bardstown, was accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Bowling was indicted last summer after the victim's mother told police that her daughter and Bowling had sex twice in Jefferson County.

"That's a recent statute because rape in the state of Kentucky is a majority age of 16," said defense attorney Frank Mascagni. " It's extended by one year if you are in a position of trust, for example, like a school teacher.

Under the deal Bowling pled guilty to two counts of rape in the third degree in exchange for probation for five years and treatment and therapy.
