5 family members trapped when pickup overturns in water-filled ditch

SCOTT COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - Five family members were injured when the pickup truck they were riding in crashed into a tree and overturned in a ditch filled with water Wednesday afternoon, according to Indiana State Police.

Scott County Dispatch received a call about 4:22 p.m. Wednesday about a one-vehicle crash on Crothersville Road near Jack Morgan Road. A trooper investigating the crash discovered that a 2001 four-door Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck was traveling east near 568 East Crothersville Road when it suddenly crossed into the eastbound lane, hitting a tree on the north side of the road. It then flipped into the ditch.

A passerby discovered the crash when he got out of his vehicle to move the tree that had been struck by the pickup truck. Sgt. Jerry Goodin with ISP said the passerby heard children yelling for help, so he walked to the edge of the roadway and saw the overturned truck. The man assisted three children and a man out of the truck, but the driver remained trapped.

Police officers, firefighters and neighbors, with the help of a backhoe owned by one of the neighbors, were able to lift the vehicle up and out of the water so the trapped driver could be rescued.

Goodin said the driver was identified as Chris Caudill, 33, of DuPont, Indiana. An EMS crew took him by ambulance to University of Louisville Hospital for treatment. Three of the passengers, Mark Caudill, 31, of Dupont and Austin, Indiana residents Ellie Caudill, 8, and Emma Caudill, 5, were taken to Scott County Memorial Hospital. Nine-year-old Kaitleen Caudill of Austin was transported by air ambulance to Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville.

Police said all the victims except Emma Caudill were wearing seat belts, and all five of them were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
