LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Congratulations to the 150 students at Simmons College in Louisville. They now attend a nationally accredited college, and with it will come opportunities to enjoy greatly expanded resources.
The Association for Biblical Higher Education granted the accreditation, given to about 100 bible institutes, colleges, and universities in the United States and Canada, who demonstrate accomplishing its mission and goals through a comprehensive system of assessment and planning.
Simmons College is an institute of biblical higher education dedicated to educating people through strong academic and professional programs so they may become productive citizens and agents of change in society. The college endeavors to develop excellence in character and ministry, promote innovation in ministry, and instill a lifelong desire for learning.
Simmons is an historic African American Baptist college, tracing its origin to former slaves 135 years ago. The accreditation allows the school to receive $300,000 in government subsidies designed for historically black colleges, and helped the college earn a $2 million gift from the Gheens Foundation. Ultimately, it will help keep the doors wide open, and allow students who might not otherwise have a college opportunity, be afforded one.
