LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A job fair aimed to help the men and women who served our country transition into civilian careers was held in Louisville Thursday.

Kentucky Medal of Honor Recipient Dakota Meyer joined the United States Chamber of Commerce to kick off the Hiring Our Heroes Job Fair at the University of Phoenix.

The event started with an employment workshop where veterans could work on building their resumes. During the fair veterans also received help to figure out how to use the tools available to them to help them look for jobs and how to sell their military skills using civilian language in an interview.

Meyer said, "There's a new mentality to hiring now. Number one, it's all done automated. A lot of this is online stuff. It's not this face to face, you know I mean, how can, and that's what we're trying to fight. You know we're trying to get in there and figure out how to get people to see more face to face."

More than 80 employers were on hand to meet and talk with veterans and their spouses about job opportunities.

Keith Sapp, an unemployed veteran who attended the fair said, "Give me the opportunity to prove myself. That's all I need. Just give me the opportunity to prove myself."

Since Hiring Our Heroes began in March 2011 more than 21,000 veterans and military spouses have landed a job from the events.
