Will SB-1062 fiasco prompt legislators to focus on budget, CPS?
PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Thursday morning, some Arizona representatives, like Bob Robson, R-District 20, wanted to refocus the state House floor.
"He [Robson] essentially called for us to focus on what's important as oppose to individual agendas or priorities," said Rep. Kate Brophy McGee, R-District 11, who was in the House when Robson made those comments.
Both state senators and representatives were busy debating and moving 66 bills Thursday about issues ranging from flood control districts to scrap metal sellers to surprise inspections at abortion clinics.
CBS 5 News asked Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-District 16, if bills such as those could make to Gov. Brewer's desk before action on the budget and/or CPS does. "Yea, likely they will be unfortunately. We're not focused on the right areas," Gallego said about other members of the state House.
Any action on the budget and CPS was not on Thursday's agenda.
"Most of them [the bills] are okay but then you have a couple bills that are trying to target Planned Parenthood, which is just not acceptable. And there's another bill that's trying to take money away from our public schools to give to private schools through a backdoor voucher," Gallego explained.
We posed the same question about progress on the budget and CPS to state Senator Steve Pierce, R-District 1. "We're working on it. Staff's working on it," Pierce said.
He says some of his colleagues learned a lesson from the SB-1062 fiasco.
"We're gonna try and do what we can to keep anything like this from happening again on some bills that may be controversial that don't really have anything to do with jobs and getting Arizona better," Pierce added.
CBS 5 News learned, progress on the budget and CPS, is happening in the House, just behind the scenes.
"We are meeting every Friday afternoon to construct the statutes that are necessary to remove the agency from the Department of Economic Security and establish it as a stand-alone cabinet agency," explained Rep. Brophy McGee, who is part of the CPS working group.
She says work on both the massive overhaul of CPS and the budget are somewhat tied together, which is why one can't be finalized without the other.
