FORT KNOX, KY (WAVE) – The pending loss of the only combat brigade at Fort Knox will result in the closure of four elementary schools at the post.
The Department of Defense Education Activity announced that at the end of the current school year Kingsolver Elementary, Mudge Elementary, Pierce Elementary and Walker Intermediate schools will be shuttered.
The four other schools on the post - Fort Knox High, Scott Middle, MacDonald intermediate and VanVoorhis Elementary - will remain open.
The DoDEA said the inactivation of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division will mean the relocation of 3,500 soldiers and their families. The enrollment is expected to be down by approximately 700 students.
The closures will impact more than 100 DoDEA employees at the post. Dr. Elizabeth Middlemiss, interim director of the Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary School (DDESS) school system, said the center of focus at Fort Knox will be to take care of school employees and continue to ensure a quality education for students.
