LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – As volunteers built beds Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer challenged everyone in the community to give back on Wednesday.

The beds were being built for Jefferson County Public School students who do not have a bed of their own as the Mayor announced his annual week of service and Give A Day initiative.

Give A Day volunteer week will kick off April 12 and run through April 20.

In 2013, nearly 110,000 people donated their time and compassion. For 2014 Mayor Fisher's goal is to encourage 120,000 people to participate.

"Most people have busy lives, but we're never too busy to take a little time to help others and improve their lives," Fischer said. "We've added more ways that people can be part of this year's week – I'd like to see every company, every citizen do something."

In addition to building the beds, plans to renovate of three vacant homes and assemble 1,000 family literacy kits will also take place during Give A Day week.

For more information, or if you would like to see how you can volunteer, click here to visit the Give a Day website.
