Dog abandoned in house for 2 months gets second chance at life

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

A dog abandoned by his owners two months ago in a Jackson County house is getting a forever home after nearly dying.

The staff at the Great Plains SPCA have named the 1 1/2-year-old shepherd mix Chance.

The dog was found Friday night in an Independence house with a few empty bags of food. The dog was severely malnourished and afraid of human contact.

Heartbreakingly, there was a large hole dug in the sheet rock that Chance had dug as he tried in vain to escape.

Neighbors told shelter staffers that the homeowners had moved out two months earlier and no one had been there since then.

A Independence Power and Light worker who came to ensure the power had been turned off found the dog.

Chance has been receiving medical care and love since he was rescued. He was neutered Thursday in preparation for being ready for adoption.

The worker who found Chance took him home Thursday evening and plans to give him lots of love.
