OVER THE RHINE, OH (FOX19) -

Construction started Friday on the future Taft's Ale House in Over-the-Rhine, a new three-floor brewpub to open where Cincinnati's rich brewing history began in the 1800s.

Taft's Ale House will occupy the previous St. Paul's German Evangelical Church on Race Street, a building that was constructed in 1850. The City of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Center City Development Corporation (3CDC) stabilized the abandoned church in 2011 and completed floor and cosmetic work in 2012.

Three men joined forces last year looking to open a new concept in Cincinnati, combing hand-crafted ales and lagers with tri-tip steak and sandwiches in a unique setting.

Kevin Moreland, David Kassling, and David Williams came up with Taft's Ale House. The brewpub's logo depicts one of Cincinnati's native sons and 27th president of the United States, William Howard Taft.

The new brewpub will have 12 hand-crafted brews on tap. Three will serve as house beers, and the other nine will rotate.

Moreland, who started the Triple Digit Brand at Listermann Brewing Co., is the brewmaster. Owner of New York City's Tri Tip Grill restaurants David Kassling will handle the restaurant and branding side of things, along with Williams as a managing partner.

Patrons of Taft's Ale House will be able to enjoy all three floors of the historic church. The main level will be the brew house floor with fermenters and serving vessels stacked behind the main bar. Shared beer hall-style tables will line the floor.

The lower level, or first floor, will be dubbed "Big Billy's Basement" and have a separate entrance from the street, 3CDC explained. Big Billy's will serve the brewpub's own barrel-aged products on tap with one rotating tap serving beer from other local Cincinnati breweries.

The new brewpub is being funded in part by the city, the Cincinnati Equity Fund and historic tax credits from the state.
