Business evacuated in Watterson Park after report of gas leak

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Fire crews secured a leaky propane cylinder that evacuated at least one business in Watterson Park.

Assistant Chief Jack Miller with the Buechel Fire Department confirmed there was a leaking propane cylinder at Neill-LaVielle, an industrial supply distributor located at 4575 Jennings Lane. It was evacuated around 12:10 p.m. Sunday after hazmat crews responded to a report of a gas leak.

An occupant in one of the buildings called fire departments when he went outside and smelled the odor, according to Miller. "Luckily someone was on the scene. Who knows how long it had been leaking," he said.

Fire crews were able to set up a water line and fog curtain to approach the tank and shut off the valve. The leak was contained at 12:56 p.m.

Several nearby businesses were checked for safety after the leak was stopped. Bishop Lane was shutdown for several hours between Jennings Lane and Champions Trace Lane. The railroad line running behind the complex was also temporarily shutdown.

Multiple fire companies responded to the situation, as well as hazmat crews, EMS and the Health Department.

There were no injuries. All roads are open at this time.
