Know Before You Go: Week of March 10

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) The following closures and lane restrictions are expected this week in connection with construction on the new downtown and east end bridges.

Downtown Crossing

Work Currently Underway.

Louisville Streets:

•Adams Street from Campbell Street to Cabel Street is scheduled to be closed through Friday, March 14, with access to local traffic only.

•Witherspoon Street from River Road to Adams Street is scheduled to be closed through Monday, March 17 for pile driving.

•The right lane and right parking lane on Preston Street from Market Street to Liberty Street are scheduled to be closed through Tuesday, April 1 for abutment work.

•The right lane and left lane of Liberty Street from Floyd Street to Preston Street are scheduled to be closed through Tuesday, April 1 for work on retaining walls and bridge decking.

•The left lane of Jackson Street from Jefferson Street to Market Street is scheduled to be closed through Tuesday, April 1 for bridge work.

Kentucky Side:

Work scheduled to begin Monday, March 10:

•The ramp from I-64 East to I-65 North is scheduled to close overnight Monday, March 10-Friday, March 14 to prepare for upcoming demolition work. It's expected to close around 9 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m. each day. A signed detour will be in place.

•One lane of I-64 East from 9th Street to I-65 is scheduled to close overnight Monday, March 10-Friday, March 14 to prepare for upcoming demolition work. It's expected to close around 9 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m. each day.

•One lane of I-64 West from Mellwood Avenue to the I-65 exit ramp is scheduled to close overnight Monday, March 10 and Tuesday, March 11 to work on access to a new overpass. It's expected to close around 9 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m. both days.

Work scheduled for Wednesday, March 12:

•One lane of I-71 North from I-65 to Frankfort Avenue is scheduled to close overnight Wednesday, March 12 for electrical work. It's expected to close around 9 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m.

Work scheduled for Thursday, March 13:

•Rolling closures are expected project-wide Thursday, March 13 for pothole patching. Work is scheduled 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Louisville Streets:

Work scheduled to begin Monday, March 10:

•Preston Street from Main Street to Jefferson Street is scheduled to close overnight Monday, March 10-Monday, March 24 to set beams. It's expected to close around 7 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m. each day.

•Jefferson Street from Jackson Street to Floyd Street is scheduled to close overnight Monday, March 10-Monday, March 24 to set beams. It's expected to close around 7 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m. each day.

Indiana Side:

Work scheduled to begin Monday, March 10:

•Restrictions on the Indiana approach to the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge are scheduled to begin Monday, March 10. Traffic will be reduced to one lane on US 31 South from just south of Court Avenue to the bridge. The outside lane will be closed, pushing traffic to the inside lane of US 31 South. The southbound sidewalk will also be closed. The restrictions are expected to be in place by around 9 a.m. and will continue for several weeks.

Continuing Closures and Restrictions:

Kentucky Side:

•The ramp from I-64 East to I-65 South closed July 15 and is scheduled to be closed through the spring of 2016.

•The right lane of I-65 South from the Jefferson Street ramp to Muhammad Ali Boulevard closed July 15 and is scheduled to be closed through 2016.

Indiana Side:

•Broadway Street has closed from Court Avenue to 6th Street. This includes the closure of the 6th Street ramp to I-65 North. These are permanent closures.

•7th Street has closed from Missouri Avenue to Broadway Street. This is a permanent closure.

•VFW Boulevard has closed from 7th Street to 9th Street. This is a permanent closure.

•US 31-South (Exit Ramp 1) from Brown Station Way to Stansifer Avenue has been reduced to two lanes.

•US 31-South, in the area just south of Stansifer Avenue, has been reduced to one lane. Vehicles are still able to exit onto 10th Street.

•The northbound collector distributor ramp in Jeffersonville has been reduced to one lane between 10th Street and Stansifer Avenue. The closure will be in place through late 2015.

•Missouri Avenue is closed between Court Avenue and S. Clark Boulevard for extensive utility work in the area. It's expected to remain closed into July 2014.

The actual starting date and duration for the work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen activities occur. Also, given the aggressive overall construction schedule for the project, Walsh DBT may shift work schedules when opportunities arise. East End CrossingKentucky Blasting Schedule for week of March 10:

Blasting to prepare for the new tunnel in the east end of Louisville is scheduled to occur near the intersection of U.S. 42 and KY 841 during the week of March 10.

Tunnel Blasting: Underground tunnel blasting, which began Jan. 27, 2014, in the east end of Louisville near the intersection of U.S. 42 and KY 841, does NOT require traffic stops. This blasting takes place Monday through Saturday during morning and afternoon hours. The noise from blasts may be noticeable, but the blasts pose no risk to the traveling public and local residents. Construction for the underground tunnel requires 24-hour work activities Monday through Saturday, and will continue throughout 2014.

The dates and approximate times for tunnel blasting will be:

•Monday, March 10, at about 7 a.m. and again at about 5:30 p.m.

•Tuesday, March 11, at about 7 a.m. and again at about 5:30 p.m.

•Wednesday, March 12, at about 7 a.m. and again at about 5:30 p.m.

•Thursday, March 13, at about 7 a.m. and again at about 5:30 p.m.

•Friday, March 14, at about 7 a.m. and again at about 5:30 p.m.

•Saturday, March 15, at about 7 a.m. and again at about 5:30 p.m.

Surface Blasting: Surface blasting, which began in June 2013, does require traffic stops. Surface blasting also takes place Monday through Saturday during morning and afternoon hours. Prior to each blast, traffic must be stopped for five to twenty minutes for the safety of the workers and the traveling public. Traffic stops during the blasts will occur on KY 841 between Wolf Pen Branch Road and U.S. 42, and on U.S. 42 between Wolf Pen Branch Road and Bridgepointe Boulevard. In the event of unfavorable weather or other unforeseen activities, blast times may occasionally change.

The dates and approximate times for surface blasting (within 15 minutes) will be:

•Monday, March 10, at about 11:30 a.m. and again at about 2:15 p.m.

•Tuesday, March 11, at about 11:30 a.m. and again at about 2:15 p.m.

•Wednesday, March 12, at about 11:30 a.m. and again at about 2:15 p.m.

•Thursday, March 13, at about 11:30 a.m. and again at about 2:15 p.m.

•Friday, March 14, at about 11:30 a.m. and again at about 2:15 p.m.

•Saturday, March 15, at about 11 a.m.

In addition to the tunnel and surface blasting taking place at the intersection of KY 841 and U.S. 42, surface blasting will take place at the north portal of the tunnel. The north portal is located in the vicinity of Shadow Wood Lane and Shadow Wood Drive. There will be no traffic stops for this blast.

The dates and approximate times for surface blasting (within 15 minutes) will be:

•Monday, March10, at about 2 p.m.

•Tuesday, March 11, at about 2 p.m.

•Wednesday, March 12, at about 2 p.m.

•Thursday, March 13, at about 2 p.m.

•Friday, March 14, at about 2 p.m.

NOTE: A message will be posted on the project website at www.kyinbridges.com Thursday of each week regarding the anticipated blasting schedule for the following week. Pre-blast surveys are ongoing; no blasting will occur within 500 feet of any residence prior to the completion of a pre-blast survey for that residence.

Indiana Side:

Blasting to prepare for the East End Crossing is scheduled to occur in Indiana, just east of Utica, between the Ohio River and Salem Road during the week of March 10. There will NOT be any traffic stops for this blast.
