LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A man was shot in the leg and required surgery after a meeting to purchase a handgun turned into an armed robbery, according to police.

Investigators said on March 4, the victim made arrangements to meet 19-year-old Matthew Trumbo and purchase the gun for $350.

According to an arrest warrant, Trumbo, the victim, the victim's girlfriend and an unknown person got into the victim's vehicle and drove a short distance. The unknown person produced a handgun and demanded the victim's cash, police said.

Everyone except the victim's girlfriend got out of the car, and Trumbo and the accomplice fled on foot with the victim in pursuit. Police said Trumbo's accomplice fired multiple shots at the victim who was hit in the left leg.

The victim contacted Shively police, and was transported to University of Louisville Hospital where he underwent surgery for placement of a steel rod in his injured leg.

Trumbo was arrested on March 12. He is charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault and first-degree wanton endangerment.
