Snow days delay summer vacation for Goochland County schools

The recent snow is having big consequences for one school system. Students in Goochland will get a late start to their summer vacation due to the amount of snow seen this winter.

"If we get as much as everybody is saying then we are probably going to close or have a two hour delay," said Goochland High School Sophomore, Rachel Taylor.

Taylor and hundreds of other students will have an extra week of classes before summer break.

"It stinks that you have to go for another week but its also good so that you get more time to get in your work and stuff, " said Taylor.

Students in Goochland have missed 16 days so far because of the winter weather.

"They are doing more work and they are doing it faster however its not the kids fault that the weather is this way this year and I kind of have mixed emotions about the extended day," said Parent Dawn Roberts.

State law requires that schools have a minimum of 990 instructional hours each calendar year. For the three elementary schools in Goochland this also means an extra 15 minutes tacked on to every school day for the rest of the school year.

Kathy Machado has a 6 year old who attends Goochland Elementary. While her daughter is looking forward to the snow Kathy says instruction time in the classroom is necessary.

"I think they needed the extra week I guess the SOLS are the most important thing but two more days of school that's going to push us farther into the summer I guess," said Machado.

Despite the additional days and minutes added to the school calendar Dawn Roberts says it is a set back she is willing to live with, especially if it means keeping her children off potentially dangerous roads.

Roberts said, "I would much rather know that my kid is safe than on a bus when they don't know what is going on."
