Snow tunes: Schools announce closing decisions in song

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

As the number of snow days pile up for schools in Central Virginia and beyond, the school systems have become increasingly creative in announcing their snow days.

The most recent storm had two local principals turning to song to hopefully ease the anxiety of parents faced with another day of restless children.

Harold Pellegreen at Lewis and Clark Elementary in Ruther Glen created his own song when the district canceled classes. In Amelia, John Rokenbrod decided to pen new lyrics to the Pitbull and Ke$ha song Timber and sang his heart out on the automated call to county parents.

Henrico teacher, Andrea Bortner, has made a hobby out of re-writing popular hits and singing about snow days. She put out a new video Monday on her YouTube channel, which also includes reworked versions of songs from Frozen, Lorde and Anna Kendrick.

Others have taken the parodies a step further. A Kentucky school racked up more than two million views with their duet of Bohemian Rhapsody. A North Carolina duo sported a Winter Olympic sweater and ski mask, while a New Jersey Superintendent enlisted the help of a high school boys choir.

Hopefully, students are being just as creative and productive as the school officials with their unexpected avalanche of time off.
