Multiple accident reports across the metro

We've received multiple reports of accidents in to our newsroom. Here are a few alerts from VDOT.

Midlothian Turnpike/Rt. 60 (Chesterfield) - All lanes were closed at Sycamore Square Drive due to a crash.

The Willey Bridge was closed in Henrico due to icy conditions. Police tell us it opened late Monday night.

Police say the Boulevard Bridge will be closed till at least 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Drivers are encouraged to use an alternate route. Expect delays.

"I think it's crazy," said Jeff Kelley who lives near Boulevard Bridge. "It's the craziest winter we've ever had."

An accident on I-95 Northbound at mile marker 47 in Prince George County has been cleared.

All travel lanes have reopened on I-295 Northbound at mile marker 37.

"People were going too fast for conditions and once they started sliding it was just a chain reaction," said Chief Lee Williams with Chesterfield Fire & EMS. "A lot of people thought that this storm wasn't that bad, but the roadways were wet."

VDOT says drivers may encounter ice on the roads, particularly on bridges, overpasses, shaded and low-lying areas.

They offer the following tips for driving in potentially icy conditions:

  • Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination.
  • Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles and moving equipment.
  • If you begin to skid, do not brake. Take your foot off the gas and steer the vehicle in the direction you want to go.
