LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Three adults and four children were able to escape unharmed after the house they were in caught fire Tuesday morning.

Lake Dreamland Assistant Fire Chief Jason Meiman said crews were dispatched to the home on Oregon Avenue, near Algonquin Parkway, around 4:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived on the scene they reported heavy smoke coming from the upper level of the home.

Meiman said the people inside the home were woken up by a smoke detector and said, "I truly believe from what I've found tonight that had working smoke detectors not have worked this may have been a tragedy."

He said it took firefighters around 16 minutes to call control. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
