(WMC-TV) - Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam asked a federal judge to pull a recent order requiring the state to recognize the marriages of three same-sex couples.
Despite a 2006 voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage in Tenn., U.S. District Judge Aleta Trauger proceeded with the preliminary injunction Friday.
According to the Associated Press, Haslam and state Attorney General Robert Cooper filed a motion Tuesday. It says overturning the law without an appeals court reviewing the case "frustrates the will of the people of Tennessee."
"Our eventual hope is that the state grants the same right to all citizens regardless of gender, and that everyone be offered the same dignity under the law," said Thom Kostura, who is married to Army reservist Ijpe DeKoe.
Trauger wrote Friday, "At this point, all signs indicate that, in the eyes of the United States Constitution, the plaintiffs' marriages will be placed on an equal footing with those of heterosexual couples and that proscriptions against same-sex marriage will soon become a footnote in the annals of American history."
