Leukemia conference coming to Mason

The Tri-State/Southern Ohio Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is presents a free informational conference for cancer patients, their families and caregivers next month. 

The conference, "New Paths to Treatment and Hope for Blood Cancer" will cover the latest breakthroughs in cancer treatments, as announced at the 2013 conference of the American Society of Hematology. The event is  8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. April 5 at the Great Wolf Lodge Convention Center in Mason.

Jackie Personett of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will be on Thursday's The Xtra to talk about the conference.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided and special room rates are available at the lodge for out-of-town guests.

Debbie Woodbury, cancer survivor, inspirational speaker and creator of the cancer survivor website wherewegonow.com will be this year's keynote speaker (speaking at 9:10 a.m.). Woodbury blogs about survivorship for "The Huffington Post" and "Cure" magazine and has authored two books: "You Can Thrive After Treatment" and "How to Build an Amazing Life After Treatment."

Conference guests will have the opportunity to attend breakout sessions to correspond to a specific cancer diagnosis of their choice, as well as several issues affecting the quality of life for patients, their families and caregivers. Sessions include the following topics:

I. Bone marrow transplants, allogeneic, bone marrow transplants, autologous, clinical trials: understanding your options, everything you always wanted to know about chemo, leukemia 101, lymphoma 101, myeloma 101

II.  Research updates for: adult AML & ALL, aggressive lymphomas, CLL & SLL, CML,  Hodgkin's disease, indolent lymphomas, MDS & MPN, myeloma

III. Family and friends: What's your role? What is chemo brain? The new normal, surviving and thriving, debunking the myths about dietary supplements and handle with extreme care: online risks and rewards.
