Assistant fire chief dies just hours after emergency response

LAWRENCEBURG, IN (WAVE) – Fire department assistant chief dies after returning home from an emergency response.

Bright Fire Department Assistant Chief Tom Stevens, Sr., 59, suffered a fatal heart attack early Monday morning. He had just returned from an emergency response involving a carbon monoxide alarm activation.

Stevens leaves behind a legacy of people dedicated to helping the community. His wife Debbie is an EMT with the Bright Fire Department, his son, Tom, Jr. is a Bright firefighter. Stevens also leaves behind another son, Michael, two sisters, his mother Alma and four grandchildren.

His death is considered in the line of duty because per the Hometown Heroes Act, anyone who suffers a heart attack or stroke within 24 hours of non-routine stressful duty is presumed dead in the line of duty.
