JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) - We were in front of the Quad in Jeffersonville, Indiana with one purpose. We were looking for help to Pass the Cash and in no time we found that help in Chris Cole.
Cole's best friend Toni needs a few things and extra cash is just one of them.
"She just had a rough time. She's moved to a new place. She just had a baby. She's had two miscarriages before. She's just really struggling right now. She just needs all the help that she can get," Cole said.
We would give all the help that we could.
We counted out $1,121 with Cole and as we did his excitement increased, "She will be so stumped, I'm so Giddy right now! She needs this so bad!"
Friends since high school. Cole was a member of her wedding party.
While we felt bad surprising this mother of a new born, for Cole the endowment outweighed the embarrassment. "I know you look like a hot mess, but I wanted to Pass the Cash but WAVE 3 has been so generous. I know you needed more than anything, hold your hand out," Cole said. As he handed Toni the cash, her embarrassment turned into an invitation to meet her precious little miracle.
Toni and her husband are not where they are today due to a lack of trying their best. Tragedy had knocked on their door far too often, and found its way in.
Toni said, "I stopped working to have her because we had so many health complications. I want to go back to work but it's hard trusting day cares."
Never taking her eyes off little Harmoni she explained the mixture of her husband's name, Harvey, and her name, Toni.
"I did deliver all my children, but they were still born because they were too early," Toni continued.
Even Harmoni came too early. Toni, her husband and doctors fought to save her life, even sewing Toni's cervix shut.
"But then when it came time for her to come my cervix dilated in two places then I couldn't give vaginal delivery. I had to have a c-section. Then her collar bone broke, but she is here," Toni said. "Our car broke down in December, we lost the apartment in December, we had her in January."
In the midst of astronomical medical bills, funeral costs and losing their home Toni said, "We're just trying to keep the faith and hold ourselves together."
