Community helps officer and family in time of need

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) -  Police officers help the community every day. On Saturday night, people came out to help a local officer's family in a time of need.

Doctors in January diagnosed LMPD homicide detective Chris Lane's 4-year-old daughter Sophie with leukemia.

A benefit was held March 22 at the River City Fraternal Order of Police lodge, called Support for Sophie, to help the Lane family cover medical costs.

Sophie's mother is a teacher and will take leave to care for Sophie through the next year of treatment.

Area businesses donated items for a silent auction. At least $34,000 was raised, according to an organizer.

A anonymous donor wants to write a matching check, but he said he wants the amount he matches to be $50,000.

Donation checks can be mailed to this address:

FOP lodge 614

6204 Price Lane

Louisville, KY 40299

Checks should be made payable to FOP auxiliary 614.
