BOSTON, KY (WAVE) - Fire damaged the Boston Community Center in a small town where neighbors use the building on a weekly, sometimes daily basis.
A witness told WAVE 3 News she called 911 around 10:30 Saturday night when she saw an orange glow inside the building.
"It was blazing. Eventually, it had a fire tornado coming out of the center that went really high in the air," Brenda Cook said.
Boston's fire department called in additional crews to extinguish the flames. The cause of the fire is under investigation by local authorities.
As soon as firefighters arrived, they salvaged quilts, ceramics and baskets senior citizens make and sometimes sell to financially support the Boston Community Center.
"The funds are used to build the community center. It's self supportive," Terry Troutman said.
Troutman and other neighbors arrived early Sunday morning to help clean out the building. Neighbors appointed to a board operate the non-profit community center - it isn't run by the city or county.
"It's known as The Center because it's just that - the center of the town where everyone meets and visits with each other," Troutman said.
Residents said support goes beyond the walls.
"This is a great place. The community is fantastic. People are great. They'll help you any way they can and I sure hope they get this place repaired or rebuilt or whatever needs to be done as soon as possible because they have Christmas parties for the kids, they'll help cancer patients and just anything - they're always there," Cook said.
There's insurance for the brick and mortar, but they're unsure how much damage is done.
"Hopefully we have enough. We don't know the extent of the damage to tell you the truth," Troutman said.
