TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Americans have less than one week left to buy insurance through exchanges set up by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

As the March 31 deadline approaches, workers who help consumers sign up in Toledo say they are seeing a rush of applications. Those workers, known as navigators, guide consumers through the up to two-hour long process. Those signing up Monday said they make signing up much easier.

"I retired a couple years ago. I won't be 65 until next April, April of 2015. So I'm in-between right now, so I just need some type of coverage," said Larry Mills, who was signing up Monday.

Navigators say the sign-up process is not difficult with help.

"They'll just have a casual conversation with you about your household, your income. They'll determine whether they need to go to the Medicaid extension website or the affordable care act website and actually enroll you in a plan," said Anna Gartner, Navigator Coordinator for the Neighborhood Health Association.

So far, over 6,000 people in northwest Ohio have signed up for health care coverage though the Neighborhood Health Association.

The group held a sign-up event on Tuesday. Those in attendance say it's nice to have the option to sign up in person.

"I'm not computer literate at all, so unless there is someone standing there to help me weed through, I would never get the application filled out," said Christine Goldberg.
