LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – On Monday, the signs at Churchill Downs were changed. It's a signal that Kentucky Derby 140 is right around the corner. Now the solid gold trophy has arrived at the place where the most exciting two minutes of sports will unfold.
It is a tedious task to create the 14-karat gold trophy. Artisans started working on it in November and put it 2,000 hours.
"The job of putting this together, which is an incredible passion and a great joy for the artisans involved in this process started last fall and doesn't culminate in this moment," said John Asher, John Asher, Churchill Downs Vice President of Communications. "The culmination of their work comes on the first Saturday in May when the Kentucky Derby is run."
The trophy stands 22 inches tall and weighs about 60 ounces. It is believed to be the only solid gold trophy that is annually awarded to the winner of a major American sporting event.
