LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - President and CEO of the Center for Women and Families Marta Miranda is passionate about the purpose of the center and its power

"We started in a one room place at the YWCA, now it's the Henry Clay Estate, in a leaky room," she said.

For over 100 years its mission has been serving survivors of intimate partner abuse of sexual violence in 10 Kentuckiana counties. Temporarily closed signs now hang on the door.

"A client came in pregnant and wanted to know where she could go, of course I could tell her, but hanging these signs, of course people are use to just walking in here and just getting what they needed and for a short time they're not going to be able to," Miranda explained.

The facility at 927 South 2nd Street has been forced to close its doors and relocate elsewhere for now.

"To make a sad and hard story short when I came on board there were a couple of small leaks," a project she said cost $350,000, "Then this winter happened."

The 9th snowiest winter in 50 years brought 25.9 inches to Kentuckiana between October  24, 2013 and March 25, 2014. With the snow came below average temperatures each of those months.

A few leaks now turned into $3.2 million cleanup project and roof replacement.

Miranda said the building is structurally sound and so are all of the programs of the Center.

Miranda said, "We could and would not in any way go public with this issue until we knew 100 percent of our clients and staff and programs were relocated."

Miranda made the plea, and the announcement, to make sure the Center on 2nd Street does not stay closed.  They now call on the community to open their hearts and pocket books.

"I'm the last person here and I will close the door and flip the switch," she said.
