A student brought a loaded handgun into a Connecticut school Thursday afternoon and it was found in that individual's backpack, according to police.

The CCMC school in New Britain, which is an affiliate of Connecticut Children's Medical Center, has students ranging in age from 5 to 21.

Officials told Eyewitness News they are aware of a student bringing the loaded handgun to school, which works with students who have developmental challenges.

"Late this afternoon we were informed of this situation. We can confirm that no one was injured and the police are currently looking into this matter. Once all facts have been gathered, we will share any relevant information as appropriate," said Robert Fraleigh, director of corporate communications at Connecticut Children's Medical Center, in an email to Eyewitness News.

The incident remains under investigation by police and the school.

"Wow, it's just crazy," said one neighbor to the school. "I mean, how can you bring a gun to the school?"
