Updated JCPS graduation dates released

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – New graduation dates for Jefferson County Public High School students have been released following Monday's decision by the school board to move the last day of school to June 6.

There was criticism for the change.

"I think it's important that we have a consistent schedule in that when the board votes, and says this is what the schedule's going to be that we hold true to that," JCPS board member Chris Brady said.

Just last week, board members had voted to make June 12 the last day of school.

"What we had was flexibility that we never had before," JCPS Superintendent Dr. Donna Hargens said.

The board changed their minds about the date after legislators passed House Bill 211 Friday.

"I'm not surprised," Brady said.

The bill allows districts to wrap up by June 6 as long as they met class time requirements.

"The longer, the more instructional time we have with our students, will help them in the longer run," he explained.

The Dr. Hargens said they will meet the required amount of instructional hours by June 6.

"It's unfortunate but when you have more information you've got to make the decision that's best for families and best for students," Hargens said.

Graduation dates were also amended.
