UofL women lose to Maryland in Elite Eight game

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The University of Louisville Cardinals will not be making a repeat trip to the Women's Final Four.

Maryland (28-6) ended the hopes for Louisville to play in its second consecutive Final Four by defeating the Cardinals 76-73 in regional finals before a partisan UofL crowd at the KFC Yum Center.

The game pitted Coach Jeff Walz against his former mentor, Brenda Frese. Before taking the top job at Louisville Walz was an assistant coach for the Terrapins' national championship team in 2005-06. The only other time they faced each other was in the 2009 regional finals. That contest was won by Louisville 77-60 to earn the Cardinals their first trip to the Final Four.

Louisville finishes the season with a 33-5 record. Maryland will next face Notre Dame in one of the national semifinal games on Sunday, April 6 in Nashville.
