WHITEWATER TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -
Rescue operations have resumed Saturday morning after a 70-year-old man fell into the Great Miami River on Friday afternoon.
Police say rescue operations were halted around 5 p.m. Friday due to increasing hazards on the river.
Units were called to the area of the westbound I-74 bridge over the Great Miami River after receiving reports that a man had fallen or jumped into the river. Police say the incident happened around 12:50 p.m.
Crews arriving on the scene confirm that an individual had fallen into the river and a full water rescue team was called.
Police and fire units from Colerain, Whitewater Township, Miami Township, Hamilton County Sheriff's Department, Cleves Police and Great Parks of Hamilton County began a shoreline search down river from the bridge for the victim. Officers say that the water was approximately three feet over the flood stage, making a rescue attempt difficult.
Helicopters flying overhead say they spotted the victim actively clinging to a log moving briskly downriver towards the US Route 50 bridge in Cleves.
Rescuers rushed to the bridge to prepare for a possible bridge-based rescue.
The helicopter pilot stayed with the victim for approximately 30 minutes when police say the victim went below the water's surface.
Authorities say boats and spotters continued their search for several hours with no success in locating the victim.
The investigation into this incident is being conducted by the Colerain Township Police Department.
