CARROLL COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - There were flash flood warnings when a mudslide destroyed a home on a hillside. Neighbors in two other homes left on their own, but no one was injured when it happened.
Those who live nearby heard pops and snaps - alerting them a mudslide was breaking tree branches and swallowing a house.
"This is the first one, of this magnitude, that I've recalled and I've lived here most of my life," said Ed Webb.
The property owner of the damaged house told WAVE 3 News they were in between leases and there wasn't a tenant living there. The red roofed home is a total loss.
Heavy rains caused the mudslide located between Knotch Lick Road and Locust Road on Highway 36. Transportation crews shut down the highway for several hours.
"It's what we call a translational landslide. It sort of slid down the soil rock interface. It hit a little natural bench in the slope and spread out. That's the part that hit the house," said geologist Matt Crawford.
The Kentucky Geological Survey Office sent Crawford to the scene to evaluate the cause of the mudslide and determine whether it's safe to reopen Highway 36.
"Luckily, no one was in the home and no one was driving by. Now that the rain has stopped, the damaged house shouldn't go anywhere and neighboring houses should be fine," Crawford said.
