Festivities leading to Thunder Over Louisville begin Monday

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Thunder Over Louisville is one week away and the city is busy getting ready for the official kick-off of the 2014 Kentucky Derby Festival.

Preparations and festivities for Thunder Over Louisville and Chow Wagon begin Monday. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels and aircraft participating in the Air Show begin arriving on Thursday.  The public venue will run from north of Main Street between Clay and 8th Street on the Kentucky side.

Here are some notable events happening the week of April 7 to 12:


  • 10 a.m. - Louisville Metro Police to announce security and traffic plan at Kentucky Derby Festival headquarters
  • 5:30 p.m. - Thunder Throwdown at Hard Rock Café


  • Chow Wagon vendor move-in and stage set-up begins at Waterfront Park


  • Thunder infrastructure set-up all day
  • 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. - Taste of Derby Festival at Louisville Slugger Field


  • 2nd Street Bridge closes at 9:30 a.m. and will remain closed through at least 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 13.
  • Thunder fireworks racks and brackets being installed throughout day - pending weather


  • 10 a.m. -  Coast Guard Press Conference on Waterfront Park Great Lawn: Water Safety Plan, Boater Safety
  • 10 a.m. - Various street closures along Waterfront venue. Concession trailer caravan set-up from East River Road
  • 11:30 a.m. - They're Off! Luncheon at the Galt House
  • 1 p.m. - Remaining streets on venue closed for duration of event - other assets being moved in
  • 7:30 p.m. - The Fillies' Derby Ball and Derby Festival Queen's Coronation Galt House West Archibald Cochran Ballroom
  • Kentucky Derby Festival, Louisville Metro Police Department and Waterfront Development Corp. personnel will strictly enforce NO OVERNIGHT CAMPING, NO TENTS – all personal items left unattended overnight in the event venue will be considered abandoned and removed (camping gear, coolers, tarps, chairs, etc).



  • KDF, LMPD and Waterfront Development Corp. personnel will enforce NO TENTS in Waterfront Park. NO TENTS, STAKES, TAPE OR PETS allowed anywhere in the Thunder venue.
  • 9 a.m. - Waterfront Park opens. North Great Lawn viewing area opens (Free admission with 2014 Pegasus Pin). 
  • 11 a.m. - Meijer Family Fun Zone on the West Belvedere opens and Thunder Chow Wagon opens at Waterfront Park.
  • Noon - Free bicycle check-in for public at city compound at Preston and Witherspoon streets.
  • Dark - The fireworks begin!
