MURRYSVILLE, PA (RNN) - An attacker stabbed multiple people at a high school Wednesday, according to area media outlets.

Authorities have a male suspect in custody who is a student at Franklin Regional High School, according to CNN.

Dr. Chris Kaufmann, director of the trauma center at Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville, told CNN he believed there were 11 victims receiving treatment, including eight at his hospital. Seven were students, the youngest 15, and one was an adult.

Kaufmann said two victims were being operated on, with another getting prepared for surgery. He described injuries as life threatening for those three.

Dan Stevens with Westmoreland County Emergency Management said 20 students had been hurt, although not all of them were stabbed. He said four had been hospitalized in serious condition.

A school resource officer called in the incident at 7:13 a.m. ET. An aerial view showed hospital gurneys outside the school and at least five ambulances, along with other emergency vehicles.

Law enforcement officials continued searching the school for any other possible threats, despite having a suspect detained.

Some students had been moved to the gymnasium area, while middle school-aged students were bused home. The school district website stated a "critical incident" occurred at the school.

"All elementary schools are canceled, the middle school and high school students are secure," the message stated. "Additional information will be released as soon as possible. Please keep our campus clear of traffic."

Murrysville, is located about 15 miles from Pittsburgh.
