LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – One of the best views for Thunder Over Louisville is actually on the Ohio River.

While the water is high and moving steadily, the U.S. Coast Guard said it is still an ok time to come out and watch on your boat. The Coast Guard encourages you to be aware of your surroundings and have the proper equipment.

They said to be prepared because it is going to be a busy weekend. Some years there have been up to 600 boats in the water watching the show.

According to the National Weather Service the Ohio River is expected to be a little more than two feet above normal on Saturday. The Coast Guard said that means boats may come in contact with a lot of floating debris.

On Thunder day, April 12, there is a no wake zone from Six Mile Island to the Big Four Bridge. If you plan to watch the fireworks make sure you have a proper anchor. In these conditions they suggest you may even need two.

"Plan ahead and look at the river levels before you go out and also take a look at your boat and make sure you engine is in good working order, all your safety gear is there and working and you have a full tank of fuel," said United States Coast Guard LTJG Geoff Albe.

The Coast Guard will be on the lookout for intoxicated boaters as well as boaters without life vests. It's also a good idea to make sure your lights are working properly if you plan to stay through the end of the show.
