MADISON, IN (WAVE) - Crews have halted work sliding the Milton-Madison Bridge Wednesday.
Between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Andrea Clifford, spokeswoman for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, said the bridge slide progressed 16 feet from its temporary supports onto the refurbished piers.
Late in the day, the slide was placed on hold due to wind gusts over the Ohio River. Clifford said it will resume as weather conditions allow.
Crews are using hydraulic jacks to pull the Milton-Madison Bridge onto its permanent piers. The bridge needs to be moved an additional 39 feet.
Using a construction method called "truss sliding," a new 2,427-foot-long truss will be moved along steel rails and plates. Once it's in place, it'll take seven days until drivers can cruise across the span between Kentucky and Indiana.
The slide is not continuous; engineers stopped occasionally to make sure the truss is aligned.
"That'll require inspections, bolting and welding the bridge into its permanent position," said Will Wingfield, spokesman for the Indiana Department of Transportation. "They'll pour concrete and install joints to allow the bridge to expand and contract. Finally, they'll paint pavement markings so traffic knows where to go."
The new bridge is twice as wide as the old one. The old bridge which linked Madison, Indiana to Milton, Kentucky was built in 1929.
