LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A memo from the FBI leaked Wednesday warned of a gang of kids, mainly middle school students, from in and around the Louisville area. That gang, it said, started at Frost Middle School in Southwest Jefferson County.

This is not the first time Frost Middle School has been in the news. It has a history of troubles.  Just this year, it's had three interim principals and an audit found low expectations and lessons that were not engaging, but if the FBI's information is true, these problems are at a whole new level.

Just blocks away from Frost Middle School, Mark Romines takes enough pride in his neighborhood that he keeps an eye out for things that don't belong.

"I've seen the kids running around. They've done their graffiti all over the village," he said.

The block watch coordinator said he and his neighbors just have to get used to the fact that some of the kids who go to the school are up to no good. Wednesday's FBI memo was the first time he'd seen a name put to the groups of young people causing problems.

"I called the police one day," said Romines. "There was three teenage kids that broke into that empty house right there. A few houses back down the other way where they've had houses vandalized and broken into."

Even with all of that, a Frost parent who lives in the neighborhood said she was surprised at what her son told her was happening at his middle school. She said he told stories of assaults by gang members in the school hallway and members laughing at a teacher who tried to stop the violence. She said after hearing that, it was hard to send her son to school.

"They're upset," Romines said of neighbors with kids at Frost. "They want their kids out. They don't want them to go there. And that's a heartbreak with me growing up in this neighborhood. My family has been here since the late 50s. I saw that school built. I attended it. My children attended it."

If the FBI memo is correct, the gang may have originated at Frost but it quickly spread.   A check of the group's Facebook page reveals members who identify with several other Jefferson County schools including Carrithers Middle, and Doss, Western, Central and Waggener High Schools.

We attempted to talk to Jefferson County Schools about any increase in security in light of what was contained in the FBI memo.

A spokesman said he didn't want to comment on security procedures but said, "just know that they are in place."
