Stage is set for biggest Thunder ever

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Thunder Over Louisville is almost here! Hundreds of thousands of people will converge on the waterfronts of downtown Louisville and southern Indiana on Saturday as KDF officially kicks off the 2014 Kentucky Derby Festival.

This is the 25th anniversary of Thunder Over Louisville. This year's theme is "Throwback Thunder," paying tribute to the two dozen previous shows. The Thunder soundtrack will highlight songs from each of the last 25 years.

WAVE 3 News is the official broadcast partner for this year's Thunder experience. The 10-hour live broadcast begins at 12:30 p.m. and will air in high-definition with 15 cameras on both sides of the river, in the air and on the water.

Social media will be a bigger, better role than ever during this year's Thunder and the entire Kentucky Derby Festival. Share your Thunder messages and photos on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using #ThunderOverLouisville. You can also email pictures and videos to Some of the best viewer-generated social media content will be shared on the air from the WAVE 3 News Interactive Zone on the 22nd floor of the Galt House Hotel and on our "Twicker" feed that will scroll across the television screen.

Traffic is always an issue on Thunder day, particularly when the fireworks end. This year, bridge construction and other road projects could make the gridlock even tighter.

Chief Meteorologist Kevin Harned with the WAVE 3 News Storm Tracking Team says there is a slight chance for rain, but temperatures will be in the 70s for most of the day. The temperature may dip as the show ends, so you may want to bring a light jacket. You'll likely need sunscreen.

Air show

The Thunder air show begins at 3 p.m. and runs until 9:30 p.m. The Blue Angels will fly from 3:38 p.m. to 4:38 p.m.
