LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - When the gates at the Great Lawn opened at 9 a.m. Saturday, a line of anxious families rushed in to get their spot for Thunder Over Louisville. First, they had to get past security officers who sifted through bags and coolers looking for items they couldn't bring in.

"The earlier you get here the better off you are," Heather Scott said.

Spectators only needed a Pegasus Pin to score a seat in the North Great Lawn in Waterfront Park.

For the Purvis family, Thunder Over Louisville celebrates the American spirit.

"This is about families and freedom," said Gary Purvis. "I thank our troops overseas for giving us the opportunity to come out here and enjoy this wonderful event."

Bringing a tarp is a good idea if you're planning on sitting on the grass to watch the air show and fireworks. The ground was still muddy as of Saturday morning.

"A little bit of mud on my shoes and clothes doesn't bother me," said Jennifer Battles. "It's a beautiful day, we arrived early to take in all the sights and sounds - we're just going to sit back and enjoy Thunder from the Great Lawn."
