LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Thunder Over Louisville was a Throwback this year – and not just for the music marking the 25 year run of one of the largest fireworks shows in North America and one of the top air shows in the nation.
Between a half million and three quarters of a million people peacefully enjoyed a beautiful day, mingling amicably with one another. The civility was welcome and added an exclamation point to the world class entertainment produced by Wayne Hettinger and the Kentucky Derby Festival.
The precision flying of the United States Navy Blue Angels and the breathtaking F-22 Raptor from the U.S. Air Force highlighted a great air show. The Great Lawn at Waterfront Park provided added attractions.
A big thank you to all of the corporate sponsors and the thousands of volunteers who made Thunder possible. Special thanks as well to the largest security presence in the event's history, who helped ensure a safe atmosphere.
Nearly six dozen Derby Festival events mark this great civic celebration, culminating in the Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs Derby Day. This festival truly showcases the best of who we can be!
