LOUISVILL, KY (WAVE) - As the clock ticked down to the midnight deadline for filing taxes, free tax preparation drew large crowds to Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, sites throughout Jefferson County.

What began as a call of duty for Sun Valley Community Center VITA volunteer Larry Mattingly eight years ago has developed into a fulfilling commitment.

"The mayor talked us into it," said Mattingly. "They're going to get $150 back and that way they'll get it all back. They don't have to pay somebody $130 to do their taxes."

Mattingly and other volunteers had been preparing taxes free of charge for people making less than $52,000 annually since January.

"I love doing it every year. I look forward to it," said Debbie Prince while volunteering at Sun Valley Community Center Tuesday.

Having served as a VITA volunteer for the past four years, Prince said she not only saw the program as a chance to keep her math skills up to snuff but also as an opportunity to help people from all different walks of life.

"You would be surprised," began Prince, "some people even have stocks and bonds and things like that but they still make less than $52,000."

While the volunteer work can be rewarding, it can also be taxing. Consequently, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer took time out Tuesday to stop by the Louisville Urban League and thank volunteers for their hard work.

"You guys are doing great work here," said Mayor Fischer.

Thanks to the donated time and services of more than 300 volunteers at over 20 different VITA sites, this tax season lower income families in Louisville have been enabled to keep more of what they earned. In turn, that accomplishment has earned volunteers like Prince and Mattingly satisfaction of their own.

"It's a great program," said Prince.
