NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - A southern Indiana high school is helping students prepare for prom at fairy tale prices.

"The Cinderella Shoppe is a place where girls can come up and rent a dress," said Charmaine Corrie, a New Albany High School instructor. "The rental fee is only $10. It pays for cleaning."

The Family and Consumer Science instructor has been helping operate New Albany High School classroom turned formal shop for the past two years. The idea, however, belonged to a former Bulldog teacher determined to address a growing student concern.

"Kim Scott, about six years ago she started the Cinderella Shoppe," said Corrie. "We see that prom is getting very, very expensive. Spending that kind of money on one evening might be just a little bit of a stretch for anybody so we thought it might just be a good idea to open it up to anybody that might like to come in and look."

Currently, after school access is only granted to New Albany High School students and their parents. But Corrie urged New Albany students not be fooled by all the sequins and tulle; the Cinderella Shoppe also caters to the prince.

"Guys are also under the gun financially to look good that evening," said Corrie.

With the Bulldogs' prom fast approaching on April 26, the need for men's formal wear and trendy dresses and shoes are in high demand.

"They can be dropped off at Door 1 in front of our building," began Corrie. "We bring them up. We size them and put them on the right racks."

While the Cinderella Shoppe had come a long way since its opening six years ago, Corrie remained determined to take it one step further.

"The goal, eventually, is to make the room more like a shop so that the girls feel like they're coming into a store," said Corrie. "I have a housing and interior design class. We're working on floor plans right now and so we're going to incorporate this store as part of a project."

Cinderella Shoppe donations are being accepted throughout the school year to help provide New Albany High School students with formal wear for the school's military ball, prom and even graduation. Donations are collected during school hours. To learn more about the Cinderella Shoppe, click here.

Across the Ohio River in Kentucky, the Prom Project also collects dresses year round to help girls in need of financial help accessorize for the big night. To learn more about the Prom Project, click here.
